Photograph of Lot 16 Lot 16 is the three cottages at the start of School Road. There had been cottages on this site for many years, but they were replaced in 1878. Their original occupiers lived not in Arborfield or Newland, but in a 'detached part of Wokingham', which was an elongated triangle of land covering Ellis Hill Farm, these cottages and the school. It wasn't incorporated into the Parish of Newland until the early 20th Century. The Sale map shows that each cottage had a garden to the side to compensate for the lack of garden behind, due to the triangular shape of the plot. These side gardens have now been replaced by a detached house built in the early 1990's. There used to be a well behind the cottages. Tenants of two of the cottages were Alick (or Alex) Streak and William Streak and their families. It seems that William was a keen gardener, judging by the number of prizes he won in the Three Villages Show held at Newlands in 1931.
