Parish Registers Here are the Baptisms, Marriages and Burials from 1580 up to the first part of the 20th Century. All are fully indexed by Surname. Sadly, the Registers in the Church Safe were stolen in 1975 and no longer exist, but we are building up the missing names from alternative sources. From 1580 to 1705, register entries have been drawn either from the main registers or from the Bishop's Transcripts. Most of the residents of the Liberty of Newland appear to have used St. Bartholomew's as their parish church, even though the area of Newland was in the ecclesiastical parish of Hurst, and latterly Bearwood, until as recently as the 1970's. Sometimes the parish of residence was noted (e.g. 'of Hurst', 'of Newlands', etc.), but often it was not. Note that the dates are expressed in the modern format, where the year starts on January 1st. In the earliest registers, the years were counted from April. Baptisms There are nearly 3,500 entries, drawn from the main Registers, the Bishop's Transcripts and the Dissenters' Baptisms. See also the Banns of Marriage 1929 - 1975, which will also list marriages that took place outside the parish - particularly important for Servicemen and women living in Arborfield. Finally, there is an Index covering the entire period of the missing registers, but it lacks the full details that you would see on a marriage certificate such as parents, addresses, occupations and list of witnesses. This list will not include Marriages by Licence, so it will be incomplete - see Registers of Services instead.
