The two Churchwardens are elected every year in April by all parishioners; all are entitled to vote, whether they are church members or not, because Churchwardens had major powers before the advent of secular Parish Councils in the 1890's. In particular, they kept the Accounts and distributed money for the poor. They still have the responsibility for running the Parish when there is no Incumbent.

At the end of every year, the Registers and Bishop's Transcripts were signed off by the Churchwardens and sometimes also by the Rector. One Churchwarden is known as the 'Vicar's Warden', while the other is the 'People's Warden'.

For the 1600's, it looks as if there had been a policy to switch functions each year, since the same name rarely appears two years in a row. The same surnames appeared over long periods of time.
