The Remount Depot Sports Day 1918

from the Reading Mercury, 10th August:

SPORTS AT ARBORFIELD REMOUNT DEPOT - A VARIED PROGRAMME.

There was a large gathering at the depôt recreation ground, Arborfield Cross, on Wednesday, on the occasion of the athletic sports, vegetable show, etc., held in connection with the No. 4 Remount Depôt. Also included in the programme were a baby show and a rabbit and goat show.

BABY SHOW
Babies born in 1917: 1, Mrs. Gales and Mrs. Baker (equal); 2, Mrs. Salisbury; 3, Mrs. Barnes.
Born in 1918: Mrs. Willoughby; 2, Mrs. Salisbury; 3, Mrs. Major.

RABBIT SHOW -
Buck: 1, Pte. Kew; 2, Miss Holland; 2, Pte. Middleton; 4, Sergt. Baker.
Doe: 1, Pte. Kew; 2, Mr. White; 3, Mr. Badcock.

GOAT SHOW
Nanny Goat: 1, Pte. Kew; 2, Pte. May; 3, Pte. Middleton.

[There followed a list of visitors; many names were repeated from previous years’ events]

Note: The Reading Standard gave a fairly detailed coverage of the Sports Day. It also gave a reason for the new animal competitions: "In order to promote keenness in animal food production, besides vegetables and fruit, prizes were awarded for the best rabbits and goats."
