This photo, from the Collier Collection, is reproduced by permission of the Museum of English Rural Life. It is a view of the cross-roads with School Road in the right foreground and the Eversley Road on the left foreground, with the Swallowfield Road fronting the 'Bull' public house.

The Reading Road in the background is even narrower than now, and until the 1850's was constricted even further by the Dissenters' Chapel, which would have been behind the tree in the distance in this detail view. Note the dust.
